Three friends who met in business school wanted to bring the community a healthy alternative to sugary beverages that dominate the aisles of area supermarkets.
John, Andreas and Daniel shared a love of kombucha, and decided it would fit the bill. Kombucha is a drink produced by fermenting sweetened tea that is naturally low in sugar and gluten free.
Unfortunately, after a great start, the healthwise entrepreneurs didn’t have the financing to grow their venture. This is where Wacif stepped in by giving them growth capital with two loans totaling $60,000.
The relationship with Wacif “was a natural fit,” said Lee. “They were great.”
Today, with Wacif’s financial backing and the creation of 8 jobs, Capital Kombucha is sold at dozens of stores in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, as well as the District of Columbia.
Among the stores you can buy Capital Kombucha today are Safeway, Trader Joe’s and Sweet Green, which sells locally grown, organic foods in communities across the Mid-Atlantic, including the District of Columbia.
The impact of Wacif’s support can be seen in Capital Kombucha’s revenues. The firm has seen a 125 percent increase in revenues. Today the beverage can be found in more than 250 stores, despite opening its doors only three years ago.
