Washington Area Community Investment Fund (Wacif)’s mission is to increase equity and economic opportunity in underserved communities in the Washington, D.C. area by investing knowledge, social, and financial capital in low-and moderate-income entrepreneurs. Our mission is driven by three strategic pillars: inclusive entrepreneurship, community wealth building, and equitable economic development, and is fulfilled by providing access to capital products and services, and capacity building technical assistance to low-and moderate-income entrepreneurs. By building Wacif’s capacity to increase the number of entrepreneurs the organization reaches with programming, our VISTA will increase wealth-building among underserved entrepreneurs and communities.

VISTA Assignment Objectives & Activities

The VISTA member will work to Increase Wacif’s capacity to effectively market its high-impact initiatives and programs so that they reach the targeted end-users of underserved entrepreneurs, helping to equitably build community wealth and lift under-resourced residents and communities out of poverty.

Assignment #1 – Build organizational capacity to identify marketing channels and build compelling program marketing content:

  • Identify the highest visibility, most engaged channels for placing marketing about Wacif programming. (07/2022- 08/2022)
  • Develop marketing content for Wacif programmatic offerings. (08/2022-07/2023)
  • Develop and share policies and procedures to ensure the organization builds figure capacity to market through these channels. (04/2023-07/2023)

Assignment #2 -Leverage partner connections and referrals to drive programming intake:

  • Collaborate with program and Development and Communication teams to identify the best partners and collaborators through whom to market these programs. (07/2022-09/2022)
  • Develop relationships with communications leads at partner organizations to develop policies and procedures for recurring and collaborative sharing of program marketing. (09/2022-11/2022)
  • Develop and socialize policies and procedures for partner outreach. (04/2023-07/2023)  

Assignment #3 – Gather internal and external feedback to develop effective policies and procedures, ensuring sustained capacity improvements:

  • Collaborate with programs teams to develop program marketing materials. (09/2022-7/2023)
  • Develop editorial policies, procedures, and standards to build the organization’s capacity to market Wacif programming. (10/2022-07/2023)
  • Collaborate with program teams to build and refine beneficiary/participant lists, optimizing the reach and targeting of program marketing (09/2022-07/2023)
  • Gather feedback from program participants to understand the customer journey from their perspective (10/2022 – 07/2023)
  • Ensure that outreach strategies and tactics align with insights from customer conversations (11/2022 – 07/2023)
  • Collaborate with Development and Communications team to build metrics and tracking mechanisms around organizational capacity (01/2023 – 07/2023)
